Rachel Reeves Labour Member of Parliament for Leeds West
Recently, Rachel met with the Deaf Ex-Mainstream Group (DEX), a deaf led organisation which aims to support children who have transitioned from mainstream schools to specialist schools in the UK.
Following a visit to parliament, representatives from DEX spoke to Rachel about the challenges faced by the deaf community and deaf students in local schools, colleges and universities.
The DEX youth representatives were an exceptional group of young people from across West Yorkshire. They raised their concerns about cuts to vital British Sign Language (BSL) services, as well as disability benefits, Access to Work and the importance of BSL being recognised as an official language.
The meeting was a fantastic insight into the deaf community and there are hopes for another meeting in the future.
