Yesterday I saw the bravery of the police and emergency services and also the coming together of colleagues and staff to support and comfort one another.

The police who protect us in parliament and in Leeds do a first rate job and I wanted to put on record my thanks and appreciation. I will be in parliament this morning for the Prime Minister’s statement before returning to Leeds.

It is important that those who want to spread fear and division in our communities are not allowed to succeed. The values that we cherish and uphold are stronger and more resilient than those who preach hatred and intolerance. As Jo Cox said, we do have far more in common than that which divides us. Those words came back to me yesterday.

Thank you to all of you who have been in touch and I know we will all hold in our thoughts the victims of terrorism and their families and friends in the days ahead.
