In a statement to the House of Commons at 12:30 today, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced the Safe and Sustainable review will be suspended, as the decision was based on a "flawed analysis". He has ordered an independent review.
The review had said said surgery should be concentrated in seven specialist centres by 2014. They were:
Great Ormond Street, London
Evelina Children's Hospital, London
Newcastle's Freeman Hospital
Birmingham Children's Hospital
Alder Hey, Liverpool
The Royal Children's Hospital, Bristol
This meant seriously ill children from across Yorkshire who previously attended the Children's Heart Unit at the LGI would have to travel significant distances for crucial medical care.
The Leeds Save Our Surgery campaign recently won its High Court challenge to the Joint Committee of Primary Care Trust (JCPCT)'s decision to remove children's heart surgery services from Leeds. They are continuing their fantastic campaign and you can find out more at: http://www.saveoursurgery.net/
