I visited Abbey House Museum on 15th March to celebrate International Women’s Day, after the adverse weather led the event to be rescheduled.

I was invited to give a talk about Alice Bacon and her achievements as the first female MP in Leeds.

Abbey House put on a fantastic celebration. It was wonderful to see so many women and men there to celebrate International Women’s Day, and also to recognise women’s achievements within Leeds and our wider society. The Museum currently have an exhibition dedicated to Leeds’ women, and I am delighted that they are promoting women’s role in history.

I will readily support local Leeds businesses and institutions in their work to celebrate women. Women have played a vital part in our city’s history so it is great to see this being recognised by businesses and with culture landmarks. I am looking forward to returning to Abbey House to see the ‘A Woman’s Place’ exhibition soon!
