Recently Rachel met the ‘Dole Animators’, a group of benefit claimants from Leeds who have come together to make a film about the real reality of the severe impact of the government’s welfare reform.
The film is closely linked to a research project by Ruth Patrick, a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Leeds exploring lived experiences of welfare reform.
Rachel said “This excellent film exposes the reality of the government’s social and economic policy which has dehumanised people. It is a very powerful piece.
"The stories in the film reminded me of many of my own constituents. I am contacted weekly by people suffering the unjust effects of welfare reforms. People who are desperate to work and aren't getting any help or support, people who are forced to use food banks to feed themselves and their families, people who are making the choice between heating and eating. I think this is a film that more and more people must watch, especially those in government who claim 'we are all in this together'.”
The short film has been made by the benefit claimants who took part in Ruth’s research with support from the documentary film maker Ellie Land.
